As a truly unique and excellent corporate group that operates on a global scale, we are committed to achieving a sustainable society.
During FY2011 a number of natural disasters including the Great East Japan Earthquake and the floods in Thailand caused a huge amount of damage. We were reminded once again that our lives and industries are inextricably linked to the Earth, and if there is even a small disruption of its systems we will experience major effects. Furthermore, we are interpreting the nuclear accident as a warning that the existing safety measures are never sufficient and that ceaseless efforts to improve safety are essential going forward. In this increasingly tough business environment, the battle by companies to survive is intensifying. In order to win that battle and grow into a truly unique and excellent corporate group that operates on a global scale, we will work hard to develop unique higher value-added products and promote globalization throughout Sanyo Chemical Group, while meeting the requirements of the business environment as it changes at breakneck speed.
Performance chemicals that satisfy diversifying customer needs

In recent years, one global trend has been the acceleration of initiatives toward the sustainable development of the human race. Now many new technologies and systems are being developed for sustainability, including energy conservation and CO2 emissions reduction measures such as hybrid cars and electric cars, expanded use of renewable energy such as solar power, geothermal power, and wind power generation, and measures to improve wide-area energy efficiency such as smart grids. In response to the accidents at the nuclear power plants caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, it seems likely that the development of these new technologies and systems will be accelerated even further. We will have to satisfy a diverse range of needs in order to achieve the development of these technologies and systems. The performance chemicals of Sanyo Chemical are developed by carefully observing the workplaces and products of our customers to accurately ascertain their needs and satisfy those needs through the functions and performance of chemical products. I believe that Sanyo Chemical is able to provide solutions that meet these new needs in the form of performance chemicals.

Promotion of CSR activities

Putting our Company Motto of Let us contribute to building a better society through our corporate activities into practice is the goal of the CSR activities of Sanyo Chemical Group, and that is why we state in our management philosophy that Without compliance, no company can be an excellent company and In the course of your actions, keep Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) firmly in mind. At Sanyo Chemical, based on the CSR guidelines we established in 2009, we promote CSR activities by stipulating the officials in charge of each field of compliance, and publishing their commitments as well as their concrete actions and schedules inside the company. Then, their progress is reported and discussed at the CSR Committee meeting held twice a year and the PDCA (plan-do-check-act) cycle is applied. In FY 2012, based on the self-evaluation method for CSR activities established in FY 2011, we will take stock of our CSR activities, ascertain their weak points and the areas that are lagging behind, and commence actions to formulate improvements. At the same time we will commence new initiatives including CSR line activities to recognize CSR among all of our employees and resolve CSR issues in the workplace.

Compliance System and Thoroughness of Safety
Based on our Code of Corporate Ethics updated in 2010, we revised the Action Guidelines for Employees, which summarizes standards of conduct needed to comply with each part of our corporate policy. As part of our Corporate Ethics Month, we also organized study groups in each department to study the Action Guidelines for Employees and Harassment Prevention Rules. Furthermore, we included compliance education in the training programs for new employees as well as for newly promoted chiefs and managers as part of our compliance strengthening measures. We also held compliance study groups for executive officers.

On the safety aspect, in April 2011, a fire struck the Katsura Research Laboratory, and in December, small fires broke out at domestic factories and an overseas factory.
We would once again like to apologize to all parties concerned, not only for the injuries sustained by our staff, but also the worry and trouble caused to the public.

We thoroughly investigated the cause of each fire, and adopted countermeasures, at the same time, identified fire risks and we implemented these measures successively at other factories.
We continue to verify the effectiveness of these measures. In addition, we continue to strengthen our BCPs (Business Continuity Plans) and risk management for large-scale disasters such as earthquakes.
In addition, in FY2011, we opened a Safety Education Center, which conducts practical safety education and training within the Nagoya Factory premises. Utilizing the Safety Education Center, Sanyo Chemical Group will carry out these activities with the goal of maintaining safe operations to thoroughly prevent accidents from happening again.
To achieve sustainable development
In addition to the protracted appreciation of the yen and the European financial crisis, the Japanese economy faces increasing future uncertainties including raw material and fuel costs, which had again risen and continued to increase, but have recently declined.

We, the Sanyo Chemical Group, will take this situation fully into account, and drastically reform our business structure as well as reinforce our foundation in order to recover profitability and achieve earnings growth.
Through the steady implementation of CSR guidelines and gaining people's trust as a good corporate citizen, we can contribute to achieving a sustainable society.
We look forward to hearing your candid thoughts and opinions so that we can further improve our activities in the future.
